The National Park Service (NPS) at New River Gorge National River (NR) is seeking local teachers to work alongside park staff to revamp the educational programming the park currently offers for area schools. To start this initiative, the park will host a paid, four day workshop for teachers to evaluate the current educational programming and to make recommendations for future focus areas, delivery techniques, and specific curriculum content. This workshop is scheduled for June 26-29, 2017 and pays an honorarium of $800 each for 12 teachers to attend. Teachers from all primary and secondary grades are encouraged to apply.

Additionally, the park will hire three Teacher-Ranger-Teacher (TRT) positions to assist in carrying out recommendations identified in the workshop. The TRT program is a nationwide program that provides professional development opportunities for teachers to learn about the resources and educational materials available through the NPS. These TRTs will work full-time for six weeks, from June 19 to July 28, 2017, and will be stationed at the park’s Sandstone Visitor Center, near exit 139 on Interstate 64.

The TRTs will receive a $3000 stipend, and will be eligible to receive three graduate level credits through the University of Colorado Denver. TRTs will work directly with park staff to develop new curriculum that better meets NPS education goals, aligns with West Virginia College and Career Readiness Standards, and more fully incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) components. TRTs will also help design field trips and service learning opportunities throughout the park. Teachers from all grade levels are encouraged to apply.

Additional information and applications for both workshop participants and the six-week TRT positions are available at www.nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/teacher-ranger-teacher-program.htm. Applications are due Monday, April 10, 2017.

Funding for the New River Gorge NR teacher workshop is generously provided by a grant from Eastern National, a not-for-profit cooperating association that promotes the public's support of America's national parks and other public trust partners. Purchases made at the Eastern National bookstores located in the park visitor centers at Canyon Rim, Thurmond, Grandview, and Sandstone directly support the NPS.
