Glen Jean, West Virginia—What is your favorite national park? August is a great time to explore this question, especially at local National Park Service sites like New River Gorge National River and Bluestone National Scenic River. Join a ranger or park partner for free hikes, talks, and other programs. Each program takes a closer look at how national parks celebrate America's story, the natural world around us and the people and places that shaped this nation's history. This month's schedule features several programs in honor of the National Park Service centennial, including special events that commemorate this agency birthdate –August 25, 1916. These activities are fun ways to find your park, be it a short guided walk through the historic railroad town of Thurmond, outdoor skills building mini-classes at Camp Brookside, or a day hike along the Bluestone River. Visit the park web site to see the complete August 2016 program schedule. Some programs do require reservations. Wear comfortable walking shoes for all guided walks. Water, snacks, a camera, and binoculars are other useful tools to bring along. We look forward to seeing you in local national parks! https://www.nps.gov/neri/ Park information and tools to help plan a visit are also online at www.nps.gov/neri, www.nps.gov/gari, and www.nps.gov/blue. |
