CONSERVATOR'S DESCRIPTION

Treatment:The letter was removed from the glass using small, repeated, local applications of hot water. Residual glue on the paper was removed with continued application of hot water and blotter. The old mends were removed from the letter and the glue reduced in the same way. The darkened glue on the old mends stained the paper severely. The letter was then bathed in room temperature calcium-enriched deionized water and dried on blotters. It was mended with Japanese rice paper and wheat starch paste.
