Grand Park 2 Fire Update, August 9, 2026

ASHFORD, WA — Emergency personnel from the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Wildland Fire Service, are responding to an active wildfire in Mount Rainier National Park, designated as the Grand Park 2 Fire. NPS staff are cooperating in the response. Grand Park 2 Fire was reported on August 7th at approximately 12:30pm. The fire is located 3 miles north of Sunrise Visitor Center in Mount Rainier National Park. The fire is estimated to be over 300 acres and is 0% contained. 

As of Saturday, August 7th, the Sunrise area and White River Campground are closed to all public access. All visitors in the affected areas have been or are being escorted from the area. The White River Road from SR410 to the White River Campground, and the Sunrise Road from the White River Campground to Sunrise, are closed until further notice. All trails originating from these park roads, and all trails in the Grand Park area, are also closed until further notice. 

Wildland firefighters are actively working to suppress the fire and protect life, property, and natural and cultural resources. Using a direct suppression strategy, firefighters are working on confinement strategy. Firefighters are using multiple different strategies to contain the fire. 

Engines, crews, and aircraft are responding to the wildfire. Additional wildland firefighting resources have been ordered to support suppression efforts. 

Fire behavior is currently described as moderate with tree torching, spotting and creeping. Weather conditions in the area have included warm temperatures, low relative humidity and wind, but conditions could change at any time.
