Mesa Verde National Park has been selected, for a second year, to receive field trip grant funding from the National Park Foundation to support the “Every Kid in a Park” program. Fourth Grade classes from the Four Corners region may be eligible to receive travel grants to assist with transportation costs, with Title I schools given priority for funding. Schools within a 150 mile range of the park are encouraged to apply. Visit the Mesa Verde website at www.nps.gov/meve/learn/education/index.htm for more information and a travel grant application form.
“Last year, over 900 students from the region were able to visit Mesa Verde with bus funding assistance from the National Park Foundation,” according to Jill Blumenthal, Education Coordinator for the park. “Many of these students had never visited Mesa Verde before, and were delighted to see cliff dwellings and other buildings used by Ancestral pueblo people long ago. The students hiked on trails, picnicked, enjoyed seeing wildlife, and participated in winter activities such as snowshoeing.”
Some classes may wish to take a ranger-led, Educational Tour of Balcony House during their visit. These tours must be scheduled in advance, and teachers should use the Mesa Verde website page www.nps.gov/meve/learn/education/bh_ed_tours.htm to submit their requests.
