Richland, W.A. –Manhattan Project National Historical Park and Whitman Mission National Historic Site rangers will lead a hike up Candy Mountain on Saturday, October 15 from 12:00–2:30 pm. The inaugural Hike Through Time ranger program is a free guided, 3.6-mile round-trip hike along the Candy Mountain trail.

Rangers will share a timeline of the mid-Columbia region starting with the Ice Age floods through the Manhattan Project and its legacies. There will be several stops along the trail before reaching the top. Rangers will share short histories of the people and events that have shaped this area. Interpretive stops will touch on the Native peoples who have lived here since time immemorial, the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the missionaries who followed the expedition, and the selection of Hanford for plutonium production during World War II.

This is a moderate hike with 555 feet of elevation gain to the top of Candy Mountain. Participants should be prepared to hike uphill, bring water and food, and plan for a variety of weather.

“The Tri-Cities region is home to intersecting histories that had profound impacts on the development of the United States and shaping the post-World War II world order. We are excited to work with rangers from Whitman Mission National Historical Park to share this history that is right here in our backyard,” said Hanford Unit Site Manager Becky Burghart.
