SPRINGFIELD, IL: On Saturday October 21, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Lincoln Home National Historic Site will host an adoption event for Springfield’s Animal Protective League (APL). APL’s Mobile Adoption Unit will be on-site near the Lincoln Home National Historic Site Visitor Center, located at 426 S. 7th Street, Springfield IL 62701.Lincoln Home visitors and Springfield residents are invited to stop by, meet some of APL’s cats and dogs, and maybe take home a pet of their own. The Lincolns’ had many pets in their 8th Street home, including a dog named Fido, and Mary Lincoln mentioned caring for cats as one of her husband's "hobbies" in an 1848 letter. Abraham Lincoln, portrayed by Fritz Klein, will be present and available for photos during the event.
APL is a non-profit organization committed to caring for sick, injured, abused and abandoned dogs and cats and finding the best possible permanent homes for them. In addition to regular pet adoptions, the organization coordinates cruelty investigations and humane education programs and operates a low cost spay/neuter clinic adjacent to its Springfield shelter.
