Omaha, Neb. – Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail has released its 2020 Annual Report. The report documents a year of partnerships and projects with the common goal of commemorating and protecting the 4,900 mile historic route of the Lewis and Clark Expedition from Pittsburgh to the Pacific.
The report describes how the National Historic Trail’s ongoing work on priority issues stayed on course in 2020. The Geotourism travel program, Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Experience, expanded reach and engagement with the help of its partners, Solimar International and the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association (AIANTA). Aging waysides across the country were redesigned and replaced with the help of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation and partners in local communities. A project to research and document high potential historic sites along the recently extended eastern portion of the Trail, is also moving forward thanks to funding support from National Park Foundation.
New outreach strategies are described in the report. Trail Talk and Fridays with a Ranger engaged visitors virtually in 2020. The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Junior Ranger Program was drafted and is being piloted at a limited number of sites.
The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail has been issuing annual reports since 2016. The reports are important milestones to highlight the work that happens through partnerships across the country. In 2020, this reporting was all the more important. In this year’s report the Trail also shared a breakdown of funding and spending.
“As you look through this year’s annual report,” said Superintendent Mark Weekley, “I hope you will take note of the wide variety of projects and partners that make up the Trail. While things are challenging right now, when I look back at the many years of achievements and the shared successes, I cannot help but be optimistic looking forward.”
