News Release Date: July 28, 2013 Aerial surveillance of the Currant Creek Fire showed reduced fire intensity yesterday, yet there were multiple small columns of smoke observed. The fire continues to burn on the north side of Currant Creek and is expected to consume most of the remaining fuels between the fire and the north edge of Currant Creek within the next couple of days if the current weather pattern persists. Two NPS fire observers remain on site monitoring the fire. The Division of Forestry has prepositioned a helitack helicopter and supplies in Iliamna. They will be stationed at the Iliamna airport for the duration of the current spell of hot, dry weather in the region to respond to new fire starts or support ongoing fires as needed. Smokejumpers are also available in McGrath to respond to any wildfires requiring active firefighting or protection measures. The hot, dry weather trend will continue through July 28 with a slight moderation through the week with a chance of thunderstorms and showers in the forecast starting Monday. |
