Port Alsworth, Alaska – While many areas of southwest Alaska have received significant rainfall, fire officials in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve are waiting for more rain to moderate fire danger enough so the burn closure can be lifted. As of Friday afternoon, the Port Alsworth and Lake Clark area had only received a tenth of an inch of rainfall. With the forecast showing more rain likely, Lake Clark National Park and Preserve will lift its ban on open burning in conjunction with the Lake and Peninsula Borough if the area receives at least a quarter inch of rain. Visitors and residents are reminded that elevated fire danger still exists in portions of the Lake Clark and Iliamna Lake region, meaning any new fires that start will spread quickly. Please use caution with off-road vehicles and any recreation activities that could start a wildfire. Wildland fire managers ask visitors and residents to stay informed of fire danger and conditions. We all have a hand in a safe fire season.
