Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site recently released several prairie restoration lesson plans and educational materials for educators to explore. These curriculum-based lesson plans help educators explore the importance of the prairie ecosystem. The lessons are also cross-curricular so the prairie can easily become a unit in your classroom. The prairie restoration curriculum materials join a long list of lesson plans about the Hidatsa, Mandan, and Arikara who lived in these villages up until about 1845.

These educational materials are found on the education section on the
park's website. They can also be found along with over 1,000 other materials and lesson plans on the National Park Serivce's Teachers Portal

The National Park Service's Teacher Portal is free of charge, and does not require an account to sign in. Educators can explore lesson plans, distance learning opportunities, and traveling trunks from National Park Service sites all across the United States.

All lesson plans and educational materials are written to curriculum standards. Educational materials can be used in conjunction with a field trip, or as independent classrom activities. Educators are encouraged to explore the site and available materials.
