National Park Services plans prescribed burn at Knife River Indian Villages NHS
Stanton, ND- The National Park Service (NPS) will be conducting prescribed fire on federal lands in Mercer County starting in May depending on environmental conditions. These prescribed fires will reduce wildfire risks and enhance wildlife habitat and native plant restoration.
Prescribed burns are planned to start later this month all the way into early June as conditions and staffing allow. Smoke may be visible during the burns. The NPS will provide community updates on social media and its website when a prescribed fire is taking place and if there are any smoke impacts if any.
Prescribed burn operations represent many months and sometimes years of planning and preparation. The current plan is to burn around 300 acres throughout a few sections of the park including: Big Hidatsa east and the area around the Park Visitor Center. The burn areas are mainly grasslands, with small areas of shrubs and trees.
When optimal conditions exist for a safe burn, park neighbors, local fire departments and law enforcement agencies will be notified prior to the burn. Signs will also be posted on the main road and impacted trails. If you are planning on visiting while we are having a prescribed burn, we urge you to stop by the visitor center for current fire information and closures.
