Klondike Gold Rush NHP and the Skagway Recreation Center will be hosting the Backpacker and Trail Improvement Finale Event this Friday, September 14, 2012. This event will encourage local hikers, ATV-ers, and other trail users to give back to their community and the trail system by cleaning them up! By the end of the summer season the Skagway Trail System has seen tens of thousands of visitors and is need of a little care. This end-of-season litter sweep of the trail system will organize people to take to the trails with gloves and trash bags to pick up litter. Participants will receive door prizes, a free lunch, and coupons from local businesses (including a free cone from the Kone Kompany) for helping to clean up their local trails. This event is also supported by the Skagway Chamber of Commerce. The event starts at the Pantheon at 4th and Broadway between 11am- 1pm on Friday with a pizza lunch and registration. Then hikers can clean the trail of their choice and return to the National Park Service Visitor Center (2nd and Broadway) between 12-5 pm to deposit litter and receive their coupons for free local goodies. This event is part of the Backpacker and Trail Improvement Series hosted by the Skagway Recreation Center and Klondike Gold Rush NHP. This series, funded by the National Parks Foundation Active Trail Grant, has engaged more than 30 local volunteers of all ages in improving nearly 20 miles of local trails, and helped collect 4 pounds of trash along the Chilkoot Trail. Volunteers have donated nearly 250 hours to the local trail system.
