Skagway –The project to improve the Dyea Flats road moves to daytime work and new closure hours beginning October 1.The project contractor, Hunz & Hunz Enterprises, has not completed the project by the original August 25 completion date. The contractor is currently working towards completing the project before a winter shutdown. At the request of Hunz & Hunz Enterprises, construction hours will move from nighttime to daytime 6 am to 6 pm Monday –Friday and 6 am to noon on Saturday. There will be weekday road closures from 10 am to 3 pm but no road closures on weekends. Work to improve the Dyea Flats road began on May 9 as part of a Federal Highways funded project to improve the National Park Service (NPS) owned portion of the road and the public access between the Slide Cemetery and the Lost Lake Trailhead. The project goal is to improve road surface and drainage. Improvements will include elevating the road surface, increasing drainage, replacing culverts, and adding widened turn-outs for safe passing lanes. The public should be aware that there is an active haul route with heavy truck traffic between Skagway and Dyea. As always please use caution while commuting between the two communities. During construction, the road will be closed Monday - Friday, except for emergency vehicles, from 10 am to 3 pm.Traffic will be flagger controlled one lane access Monday - Friday from 6 am to 10 am and 3 pm to 6 pm and Saturday 6 am to noon with up to 15 minute delays. The project will continue until the work is complete or the onset of winter weather. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this project. Klondike Gold Rush strives to maintain exceptional visitor and public services. Please feel free to contact the park with any comments or questions regarding this project. |
