Skagway – Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park archeologists will conduct archeological excavations on lots along Broadway and Fourth Avenue (Block 27 lots 1 and 2) during the summer of 2017. The area being studied is the green space south and west of the Pantheon Saloon Complex including the native plant garden. Archeologists will be excavating test units to determine if there are intact archeological remains or structural remains related to the Hotel Seattle that occupied on the lot during the 1898 gold rush.

While active excavations are taking place, construction fencing will be placed around the pits to protect visitors and patrons from injury, but the park hopes to avoid blocking off the entire green space. Visitors will see archeologists working, and the park will post times for interpretive presentations and discussions about what’s being found. The planned work schedule is June 5th through August 18th. Please contact the park office with any questions.
