ATLANTA – Stanley C. Bond, Ph.D., has been named Superintendent of Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park in Kennesaw, Ga. His assignment will be effective January 5, 2009. Bond is currently the Superintendent of the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail, headquartered in Oakland, Calif., where he has served for almost four years.

"We are very excited to have Stan rejoin us in the Southeast Region," said David Vela, Southeast Regional Director. "He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience that will benefit this historic battlefield park and all who it serves."

A native of Beaufort, South Carolina, Bond received a B.A. in Anthropology and a B.S. in Geology from the University of Alabama, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Anthropology from the State University of New York at Albany. His dissertation, titled "Tradition and Change in First Spanish Period (1565-1764) St. Augustine, Florida Architecture: A Search for Colonial Identity", examined the role town planning and architecture played in the development of New World Spanish colonial identity.

Bond is a nine-year veteran of the National Park Service (NPS). Prior to his current assignment, he was the integrated resources manager for Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, from 1999-2005.

Before joining the NPS, he worked as archeologist for the U.S. Army Environmental Center, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. He also spent 14 years as the archaeologist for the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board, and has been an adjunct instructor at Flagler College, St. Augustine, Florida.

"I am honored to have been given the responsibility of leading this wonderful, historic park that means so much to its surrounding community, and to the nation," Bond said. "It’s important to preserve and tell the story of what happened on its fields of battle and what the result meant to America. It’s also important to realize that the community views the park also as vital green space. I look forward to working with the park’s neighbors to build on the successes of the past."

Bond has been married for 28 years to Kim Wiles. They have two sons, Will, 19, and Bryan, 17. Off duty, he enjoys tennis, fishing, cooking and gardening.
