Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park
Co-hosts Virtual Campout Memorial Day Weekend
Kennesaw, GA – This weekend, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park will co-host the National Park Service Memorial Day Weekend Virtual Campout, a three-day social media event offering a trove of unique park adventures visitors can enjoy from the comfort of their own living rooms and backyards.
Twenty national park units across the American South and Caribbean have teamed up for the effort, which kicks-off on Facebook May 23 at 3 p.m. EDT/2 p.m. CDT. The weekend series features a range of videos, activities and livestreams suitable for all ages covering topics from history to nature and recreation. Viewers can listen to songs and stories of the national parks with Florida’s Biscayne National Park, attend a virtual astronomy program hosted by Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve in Louisiana, learn to set up a Civil War tent at Georgia’s Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park or join in any of the other activities taking place throughout the weekend.
As part of the virtual campout, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park will present a Civil War tent demonstration at 5:00 p.m. and modern-day skillet baking at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 23.
"Until the day we can safely visit our beloved parks, we welcome and encourage you to help tell others about the amazing virtual camp-out experiences for all. This event is designed to keep our visitors and staff as safe as possible by mitigating the spread of the coronavirus”, said Lindsey Phillips, Kennesaw Mountain’s acting superintendent.
While currently under limited operations, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is using a phased approach to increase on-site access, in accordance with federal and public health guidance.
