This year Kenai Fjords National Park will again be celebrating National Park Week, April 18-25th by bringing an artist into every classroom of the gateway community, Seward, Alaska.
National Park Week is a time when we celebrate our national parks as special places that preserve natural landscapes and our nation’s heritage. Here in Alaska the parks are still covered in snow so we bring the park to the students.
This year 10 local artists will donate their time and talents to all of the Seward classrooms grades K-12. The program, Arts for Parks, brings local artists and students together to create Art about Kenai Fjords National Park. The theme this year will focus on the seabirds of the park. Student artists will create their own interpretations of the local seabirds using many different art forms.
At the completion of the classes, all of the artwork will be displayed at the NPS Information Center for everyone to admire. This year’s opening night for the art show is Friday May 7th from 6-8pm. Kenai Fjords National Park will join with the local artists community in celebrating “First Fridays,” an evening of art openings through-out the town.
Thank you to the artists in our community for enriching all of our lives by sharing their talents with Seward and our local students on behalf of the park.
