Two Wildfires Monitored in Katmai National Park and Preserve

KING SALMON, Alaska --- Two wildfires are currently being monitored by personnel with the National Park Service and Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection within the boundaries of Katmai National Park and Preserve.  Both fires are likely lightning-caused, and do not pose an immediate threat to life or property.

The American Creek Fire (#143), is located in the hills south of Nonvianuk Lake, and north of Lake Coville near American Creek. The fire is estimated at five acres upon last observation and burning in mixed spruce and tundra.

The Naknek Lake Fire (#146), located approximately nine miles west of Dumpling Mountain and two miles south of the Naknek Lake southern shoreline, is currently at five acres, burning in mixed spruce forest. This fire is easily seen by boat and air traffic between King Salmon and Brooks Camp.

Additionally, report of smoke in the area approximately eight miles north of the confluence of American Creek and Lake Coville near American Creek is being evaluated by Southwest Area Forestry and Fire Protection to determine whether it could be a separate fire, or related to Fire #143.

Since the anticipated risk to sensitive resources is low, we are monitoring the fires while maintaining natural ecological processes.  The short-term weather forecast indicates a moderation of fire conditions through the upcoming week.
