KING SALMON, Alaska (Jan. 25, 2023) – Sharpen your pencils, take out your paintbrush, boot up your graphic design software and tap into your creativity! Katmai National Park is drawing on the talent of residents of Southwest Alaska to leave a mark on visitors from around the world. The National Park Service invites artists of all ages from the Southwest Alaska region to submit their designs for this year’s Brooks Camp bear etiquette pin. The selected design will appear on thousands of bear pins distributed to Katmai National Park visitors this summer. In addition to the satisfaction of seeing their artwork reaching an audience from around the world, the winner will also receive a pair of pins as an award.Bear etiquette pins are awarded to every Brooks Camp visitor who completes the mandatory bear safety training (also known as “bear school”) and serve as a visual reminder of their training. Each year’s unique pin depicts a graphic representation of bears and other natural and cultural resources of Katmai National Park. A limited-edition colored bear pin is also awarded to visitors who are exemplars of responsible behavior around bears at Brooks Camp. Let your artwork be the enduring symbol of bear school’s graduating class of 2023 by submitting your design before the deadline!
The design competition will run through Feb. 21. Entries can be submitted via email at KATM_Visitor_Information@nps.gov. Complete contest rules are available on the park’s website https://www.nps.gov/katm/getinvolved/katmai-2023-bear-pin-contest.htm or by contacting the park. We can’t wait to see what you create!
