King Salmon, AK – Katmai National Park and Preserve (Katmai NP&P) Following guidance from the White House, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and State and local public health authorities, Katmai NP&P is glad to announce the partial reopening of the Brooks Camp Developed Area (BCDA) to day-use-visitation starting today, July 1, 2020. This event increases recreational access to Katmai NP&P and we are pleased to be welcoming visitors back to the area at long last! The Brooks Camp Visitor Center will be open daily from 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Upon arrival visitors should expect modified operations in the area due to concerns related to Covid-19. Overnight accommodations both at the Brooks Camp Lodge and campground remain closed.

The health and safety of our visitors, employees, volunteers, and partners continues to be paramount. Katmai NP&P strives to ensure that park provided functions and services comply with current public health guidance. We also work closely with the Office of Public Health to ensure key park facilities are safe and clean and we conduct risk assessments on an ongoing basis relating to every aspect of our operations, the results of which are used to inform management decisions.

Accordingly, given the remoteness of the BCDA and recent increases in COVID-19 cases in gateway communities that provide access to the Brooks Camp Developed Area, we have determined to further delay the earliest possible date for overnight accommodations until August 10, 2020. This includes both the Brooks Camp lodge and campground. If Brooks Camp overnight accommodations become possible this season, the park will formally announce the opening date via a separate press release with as much anticipation as possible.

Areas outside of the BCDA within Katmai NP&P remain fully accessible to the public in accordance with the latest federal, state, and local health guidance. Law Enforcement and first responder services remain accessible.

The CDC has offered guidance to help people recreating in parks and open spaces prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Details and updates on park operations will continue to be posted on our website and social media channels. Updates about NPS operations will be posted on www.nps.gov/coronavirus.
