PH 01 Kalaupapa Settlement Photograph Collection

About:

The Kalaupapa archvies contains archival documents representing the late twentieth century management of the Kalaupapa peninsula by the National Park Servcie. For records pertaining to the management of the settlment prior to the Naitonal Park Service contact the Hawaii State Archvies. For information about the Cathlic Church contact the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts United States Province Archives.

Access to Collection:

The collection is available for research and educational purposes; however, since preservation of the collection is of primary concern, access is regulated. Access to the collections may be denied if the requested use is determined not to be in the interest of the collection, Kalaupapa National Historical Park or the National Park Service. Access to the collection is by appointment from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (except on Federal holidays) and will be dependent upon an individualʻs needs and availability of staff. If requesting access to the collection, please contact Park Museum Curator (katie_matthew@nps.gov).

Finding Aids:

Finding aids contain information on the contents and significance of an archival collection. The finding aid may include descriptive information; repository information; collection history; biographical or historical information on creators of the collection; and in some cases a container or folder list of everything in the collection.

NATIONAL PARK SERVICE COLLECTION

Administration Records (1975-2014, Undated) contains records pertaining to managerial and operational activities at Kalaupapa National Historical Park. Material types include correspondence, memoranda, reports, meeting minutes and agendas, notes, permits, planning documents, land records, cooperative agreements, newspaper clippings, still images and other related materials. The majority of this collection is undated photocopies. In lieu of listing file units as undated in conjunction with original materials’ inclusive dates, researchers should anticipate encountering undated materials in many file units. Administration Records is an artificial collection created in 2024 by merging two legacy collections Central Files (KALA 16225) and Superintendent Records (KALA 22407).

  • Kalaupapa National Historical Park Cultural Resource Management Records, 1977-2016 (KALA 22167)

Kalaupapa National Historical Park’s Cultural Resource Management Records (1904-2018) contain official National Park Service (NPS) records related to cultural resource stewardship at KALA. These records date from 1904-2018, with the bulk of the records occurring from 1977-2016, subsequent to the establishment of the Cultural Resources Management (CRM) department in 2000. Document types include reports, correspondence, surveys, memorandums, journals, maps, plans, photographs, and audiovisual materials. 

The focus of this collection is from 1977-2016, with a high volume of documentation pertaining to archeological projects, historic structure preservation and rehabilitation, cultural landscape inventories, ethnographic oral history projects, and museum collections care and management. 

The Natural Resource Management Records (1980-2011, undated) contains records pertaining to technical, operational, policy and project planning activities in the management of natural resources at Kalaupapa National Historical Park. Material types include correspondence, memoranda, reports, meeting minutes and agendas, field notes, biotic inventories, research data, permits, environmental assessments, still images and other related materials. The majority of this collection dates from 1980-2002.
