HISTORY
Kalaupapa National Historical Park was established in 1980 after having been designated Kalaupapa National Historic Landmark District in 1976. In 1984, Henry Law was named the first superintendent. Administratively, since its establishment Kalaupapa National Historical Park has worked with the patient community of Kalaupapa, the Hawaii Department of Health, the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, and various cooperating associations in different facets of park operations. The National Park Service owns the 22 acres of land surrounding the Molokai Light Station. However, the bulk of the park’s acreage is owned by the state of Hawaii and managed by the National Park Service under long-term leases. Since the park’s establishment, there has been planning for a stewardship transition from the Hawaii Department of Health to the National Park Service.

DESCRIPTION
Administration Records (1975-2014, Undated) contains records pertaining to managerial and operational activities at Kalaupapa National Historical Park. Material types include correspondence, memoranda, reports, meeting minutes and agendas, notes, permits, planning documents, land records, cooperative agreements, newspaper clippings, still images and other related materials. The majority of this collection is undated photocopies. In lieu of listing file units as undated in conjunction with original materials’ inclusive dates, researchers should anticipate encountering undated materials in many file units.
Administration Records is an artificial collection created in 2024 by merging two legacy collections Central Files (KALA 16225) and Superintendent Records (KALA 22407).

File unit numbers denote the location of materials and are assigned BOX.FOLDER.
PROVENANCE
The materials in this collection were created by Kalaupapa National Historical Park.
In 2024, the decision was made to shift the archives to a records group model. The record groups are Administration Records, Cultural Resource Records, Natural Resource Records, and Maps, Plans, and Drawings Collection. Reprocessing was done to distribute materials into their new record groups. Original order and file units were kept intact when feasible.
Administration Records was created by merging two legacy collections Central Files (KALA 16225) and Superintendent Records (KALA 22407, inactive). Between 2005 and 2019, Central Files were processed by Carola DeRooy, Rowena Harrington, Carolyn Larson, Brenna Lissoway, Sister Alicia Damien Lau, Julia Aleszczyk, Rebekah Kallgren, and Sara Berry. Between 2005 and 2018, Superintendent Records were processed by Carola DeRooy, Julia Aleszczky, Sister Alicia Damien Lau.
KALA 22407 is an inactive record and its contents has been incorporated into KALA 16225
