HISTORY

In 1980, the division of Natural Resources Management was established at Kalaupapa National Historical Park. The park contains geological, terrestrial, aquatic, and marine resources. These natural resources include, and are not limited to, North Shore Cliffs National Natural Landmark, a volcanic crater and crater lake, lava tubes, ohiʻa rain forests, offshore islets, basalt shorelines, freshwater streams, and coastal spray areas. Marine resources of note include Hawaiian monk seals and well-preserved coral reef communities. At large, the park is habitat to at least 20 federally listed endangered and threated species. Natural Resources Management works to steward these natural resources as well as controlling and monitoring pests and invasive species, in particular feral ungulates, testing water quality, and facilitating external researchers and community partnerships. Previous heads of Natural Resource Management include Rick Potts and Guy Hughes. In 2024, Natural Resources Management was merged into Integrated Resources Management.

DESCRIPTION
The Natural Resource Management Records (1980-2011, undated) contains records pertaining to technical, operational, policy and project planning activities in the management of natural resources at Kalaupapa National Historical Park. Material types include correspondence, memoranda, reports, meeting minutes and agendas, field notes, biotic inventories, research data, permits, environmental assessments, still images and other related materials. The majority of this collection dates from 1980-2002.

ORGANIZATION

The collection is into seven series. Series 01: Administration, Series 02: Geology, Series 03: Kauhakō Crater, Series 04: Vegetation Management, Series 05: Water Resources Management, Series 06: Wildlife Management, Series 07: Multimedia. Series: 01 – Series 06 are arranged alphabetically by subject. Series 07 is arranged by material type.

File unit numbers denote the location of materials and are assigned BOX.FOLDER.

In lieu of listing file units as undated in conjunction with original materials’ inclusive dates, researchers should anticipate encountering undated materials in file units

This record group contains several file units which are restricted. NPS staff will review access to these materials on an individual basis.

PROVENANCE
The materials in this collection were created by Kalaupapa National Historical Park.

In 2024, the decision was made to shift the archives to a records group model. The record groups are Administration Records, Cultural Resources Records, Natural Resources Records, and the Maps, Plans, and Drawings Collection. Reprocessing was done to distribute materials into their new record groups. Original order and file units were kept intact when feasible. Initial processing of Natural Resources Management Records began in 2014 by Kelly McCormick. Processing was completed by Emma Squire in 2025.
