The goats have departed from Johnstown Flood National Memorial, as they have completed their work here for the season as part of the Lakebed Rehabilitation Project. The goal of this project is to restore the area to a low-lying meadow to allow the visitor to imagine the extent of the lake and to envision the historic flood.Allegheny GoatScape, based out of Pittsburgh, PA, supplied the herd of goats to assist in clearing vegetation in the lakebed. The mission of Allegheny Goatscape is to “reduce invasive and unwanted vegetation in public spaces and vacant lots, utilizing goats for browsing.” The herd of goats cleared about 5 acres of vegetation on the north abutment side of the dam. A group of dedicated volunteers assisted park staff in the daily care of the goats.
This herd will join Team Diamond, also of Allegheny GoatScape, at Flight 93 National Memorial to help remove autumn olive from the fields surrounding the memorial.
