Winning Essay, Sophie Isla:

Who was the commander of the PT 109? Who was the 35th President of the United States? Who was the first Catholic President? The answer is President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. JFK was born May 29th, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts. Did you know his daughter had a pony named Macaroni? John F Kennedy was many things but to me he was a leader and a helper.
One way JFK helped is he set many goals for the country during his presidency. For example, Kennedy wanted the United States to be the first country to put a man on the moon. When the PT 109 was destroyed, JFK saved a man too burnt to swim. He became a war hero but he also became a helper.
John F Kennedy's first speech as president was “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” What did I tell you? He was a leader. Sometimes he was both a helper and a leader. For example when he helped create the Peace Corps, a program to help people around the world. Or when he worked for equal rights for all people. At this time in history people with darker skin were not treated fair, they were not allowed to go to the same restaurant or schools as everyone else, they couldn't even drink out of the same water fountains! Crazy! JFK helped change that.
Once he had to send the National Guard to protect a student going to school! Well the student named James Malone was able to go to school. That evening John F Kennedy gave a speech on national television supporting equal rights. Another way JFK helped is when more than 100 soldiers were killed he took full responsibility even though it was not his fault.
I chose to write about this part of JFK's life because if he had not helped change equal rights my best friends would not be treated fair. Also I think my brother is similar to JFK, he does not have eight brothers and sisters but he is a big helper and will probably be a great leader someday. This is what JFK means to me.

Runner-Up Essay, Benjamin Schultheis:

Do you know about John Fitzgerald Kennedy? Well if you do not, then keep reading. JFK was born on May 29, 1917 on Beals Street in Brookline, Massachusetts. JFK was a brave, courageous, and loyal leader.
JFK was a brave, courageous, and loyal leader for many reasons. One reason is JFK was a war hero in World War II and the commander of a boat called the PT 109. His ship the PT 109 was cut in half by a Japanese destroyer. Two men were instantly killed. The survivors hung to the wreckage until morning. Then JFK told the eleven survivors to swim until they found land. One of the men was too badly burned to swim. The man said to leave him but JFK wouldn't leave anyone behind. JFK took the strap of the man's life jacket in his mouth and swam five long hours. When they made it to shore JFK swam to nearby Islands looking for people. Finally JFK found two natives with a canoe. JFK wrote in a coconut shell, gave it to the native, and a few days later they were rescued.
JFK also believed in rights for all people no matter how different. JFK inspired us to never give up and always keep going and keep trying to make the world a better place.
