WHAT: In honor of the 98th anniversary of the founding of the National Park Service, on Sunday, August 24, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial will host special celebratory activities. The National Park Service was created on August 25, 1916.

“The 98th birthday of the National Park Service marks a historic time for its employees and visitors, as well as the entire national park system,” said Ann Honious, Chief, Museum Services and Interpretation, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. “We’re honored to take part in commemorating the love of America’s natural and cultural resources, and invite you to join us in celebrating this occasion.”

On Saturday, August 23 at 7 p.m., Flicks and Foodies, a free outdoor movie night on the Arch grounds, will entertain those looking to experience the Gateway Arch in an entirely new way. Starting at 7 pm, visitors can gather on the grounds and enjoy dinner from local food trucks. At sunset, an action-packed thriller will show underneath the Arch on a giant projection screen. Visit www.facebook.com/gatewayarchnps for the movie title.

On Sunday, August 24, from 1 to 4 p.m., visitors can enjoy free, hands-on activities, including children’s story time, arts and crafts, Leave No Trace discussion, camping demonstrations, and puzzles and games. Kids ages 5 through 12 are invited to participate in the Junior Ranger program. Upon completion of the program’s activity booklet, they’ll earn a Junior Ranger badge.

On Monday, August 25, NPS’s official birthday, visitors will enjoy $3 off their Journey to the Top tram ride, or tickets to the Arch movies “Lewis and Clark: Great Journey West” or “Monument to the Dream” all day.

The National Park Service will celebrate its centennial in 2016.
