The general management plan/environmental assessment (GMP/EA) for Hovenweep National Monument (NM) is now available for public review and comment. The GMP/EA evaluates two alternatives, including the National Park Service preferred alternative, for resource protection, visitor use and experience, and site operations to direct park management at Hovenweep NM for the next 15-20 years. This draft plan is the culmination of an extensive team effort that included consultation and coordination with federal, state, and local officials, tribal governments, and members of the general public via newsletters, public meetings, government consultation, and other means.
The GMP/EA is available for review at the Hovenweep National Monument visitor center and at the National Park Service Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) website at www.parkplanning.nps.gov/hove.
As part of the general management planning process, the National Park Service will host two public meetings on September 7 and September 8, 2011 to obtain public input on the general management plan/environmental assessment. Each meeting will be an informal forum for the public to learn more about the general management plan, meet National Park Service staff, and provide comments on the alternatives in the plan.
Meetings will be held as follows:
Wednesday, September 7, 2011
5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (MDT): The Blanding Arts and Events Center, 715 W 200 S, Blanding, Utah, 88418
Thursday, September 8, 2011
6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (MDT): Cortez Public Library, 202 North Park, Cortez, Colorado 81321
Comments on the GMP/EA should be received on the PEPC website or in the park office by September 29, 2011. For more information, please contact Corky Hays, Superintendent, Hovenweep National Monument, at 435-692-1234, x15.
