Homestead National Monument Honors Volunteers Gayle and Nancy Hanshaw Named Volunteers of the Year

Homestead National Monument of America recently recognized its volunteers at a special ceremony. Over 600 volunteers provided 14,000 plus hours of service in the last year with Gayle and Nancy Hanshaw named Volunteers of the Year.

Gayle and Nancy Hanshaw, both Lincoln residents, are active volunteers at Homestead National Monument of America. Gayle has taken the lead role in planning the Homestead National Monument of America annual car and truck show since it was first held four years ago. Nancy takes the lead in planning the additional activities to the car show. The Hanshaws also volunteer at a variety of monument events throughout the year helping wherever they are needed; from parking cars, to arranging displays, to welcoming monument visitors. They have also provided several special displays throughout the year.

At the annual volunteer recognition event, volunteers receive awards based on the number of hours contributed to the monument with categories for 25 hours, 50 hours, 100 hours, 250 hours, and 500+ hours. This year, three volunteers exceeded 500 hours of service to Homestead National Monument of America: Catherine Berger, Gayle Hanshaw, and Elizabeth Garcia.

“Volunteers are a vital part of the operation at Homestead National Monument of America. The programs we offer and the projects completed are dependent on assistance from volunteers. Their hours are equivalent to seven full time employees. We are grateful for the work and support from all the volunteers that help Homestead National Monument of America move forward,” stated monument Superintendent Mark Engler.
