Homestead National Historical Park Announces Outdoor Explorer Programs
Beatrice, NE – Children of all ages and their families are invited to experience Homestead National Historical Park’s Outdoor Explorer Series as part of the Kids in the Parks Program. Be ready to become a Prairie Protector and join a ranger-led adventure through the restored prairie. These fun walks will ignite your inner naturalist (scientist), while the art activity will awaken your inner artist. This socially distanced outdoor program is a series of nature focused prairie walks that conclude with an art activity. They are free of charge and will take place every Saturday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am beginning July 10th and ending on August 7th.
Program participants will meet at the park’s Education Center outdoor courtyard. We will be outdoors so please dress appropriately for the weather. Sunscreen, hats, water bottles, insect repellent, and closed-toed shoes are highly recommended. Program length is an hour and subject to weather conditions.
On Saturday, July 31, a special guest will lead the program. Linda Stephen is an author and illustrator of the children's’ book "The Day We Went to the Park. "A self-taught paper artist, her origami collages are exhibited nationally.
July 10th Bird Walk Go birding with a ranger, explore bird calls and learn to identify common birds. Make and take a simple bird feeder home.
July 17th Leave it to the Leaves Let’s walk the prairie and use a dichotomous key to identify the common trees. The art activity will be painting leaves and pressing them onto paper.
July 24th Butterfly Walk This ranger led walk heads through the prairie with a butterfly field guide. Make a glass pane butterfly, a fun activity with tissue paper.
July 31st Origami Join author and illustrator Linda Stephen for a walk and an origami activity.
August 7th Nature Journal Let’s walk the prairie and reflect on how we feel in and about nature.
