Does your fiddle need a tune up? Need some advice about your banjos broken bridge? If so, you need a luthier! A luthier is a person who makes and repairs stringed instruments. You are invited to bring your string instrument issues to the Tallgrass Prairie Fiddle Festival at Homestead National Monument of America on Saturday, May 25, 2019 and visit with luthier Marilyn Wallin. While at the monument, Wallin will provide free tune-up services for string instruments and discuss repair options. She will be at Homestead starting at 10 a.m. and will continue to work with string instruments through the afternoon.When asked to be a part of the music festival, she said “Yes!” She was excited at the idea of helping musicians clean and polish their string instruments, advise about repairs, and to be there "just in case..." for things that come up. Marilyn has been the past president of the Violin Society of America and has been a part of some of the biggest music stages in America, working with such groups as the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra and many other groups. “She is a well-known, well respected and personable instrument maker and we are fortunate to have her join us for the Tallgrass Prairie Fiddle Festival,” stated Superintendent Mark Engler.
The Tallgrass Prairie Fiddle Festival has been celebrating music from the homesteading period for two decades. Music was a common thread among pioneers of all ages. The Tallgrass Prairie Fiddle Festival is free for competitors and spectators alike.
Music fans wanting to spend the day at the Monument can do so. You may participate in a fiddling workshop at 10 a.m. and a harmonica workshop at 11 a.m. Back Alley Eatery will be on hand to serve lunch and drinks. Thanks to the Coffin Family Foundation, Humanities Nebraska, and Friends of Homestead for providing prizes and making this event possible.

Homestead National Monument of America is a unit of the National Park Service located four miles west of Beatrice, Nebraska and 45 miles south of Lincoln. Hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Beginning on May 27, 2019 the summer hours begin which are 8:30-5:00 daily.
