Beatrice Public Library Monthly Book Discussion on September 26th, Hosted by Homestead National Monument of America

On Thursday, September 26th, at 7 p.m. Homestead National Monument of America will host the monthly Beatrice Public Library Book discussion at the Homestead Education Center. In honor of the Midwest Archeological Center’s 50 years with the National Park Service, we will discuss When the Land Was Young: Reflections on American Archaeology by Sharman Apt Russell. Russell covers the rich history of archeology in the United States, including topics such as archeology at National Park sites, working with Native American tribal governments, feminism, and mammoths and saber-toothed cats. Homestead’s Historian, Jonathan Fairchild, will co-lead the book discussion with Beatrice Public Library’s Laureen Riedesel as well as shed light our nation’s epic homesteading story.
 
“We are glad to once again be partnering with the Beatrice Public Library to host a book discussion and are honored by their book choice and invitation to participate. This is a great opportunity to bring the community together at the Monument to learn about the rich history of archaeology in America,” stated Superintendent Mark Engler.

If you would like to join the discussion, copies of When the Land Was Young: Reflections on American Archaeology by Sharman Apt Russell are available at the Beatrice Public Library at 100 N. 16^th Street in Beatrice. Everyone is welcome to attend this stimulating community event. As reminder, the Beatrice Public Library hosts a monthly book discussion on the fourth Thursday of every month – contact the library at 402-223-3584 to find out what they are reading next!

Homestead National Monument of America is a unit of the National Park Service located four miles west of Beatrice, Nebraska and 45 miles south of Lincoln. Hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.  Admission is free.
