BEATRICE, Neb. – Homestead National Historical Park is proud to recognize March as Women’s History Month by offering two FREE ranger-led programs exploring women’s roles in understanding Great Plains landscapes and in developing United States public lands on Sunday, March 3, and Sunday, March 24. Both programs start at 2 p.m. at the park’s Education Center.
When homesteaders moved to the Great Plains in the 1800s, they encountered unfamiliar environments. Women traveling to and settling on the Plains produced a wide range of written commentaries on the landscapes they witnessed, which were then eagerly read by people from all around the world. On March 2 at 2 p.m., join Education Program Specialist Rob Briwa at the park’s Education Center to learn more, and reflect on, the contributions women writers made to making the Great Plains a unique region.
Today the United States National Park System is often called “America’s Best Idea,” but it took time and effort for the park movement to develop. In the early 1900s, women’s civic organizations took the lead in calling for and developing parks, including Homestead National Historical Park. On March 24th at 2 p.m., join Education Program Specialist Rob Briwa at the park’s Education Center to learn more about how women paved the way towards making the parks idea an enjoyable reality.
