Kids in Parks: Build a homestead cabin at Homestead National Historical Park

BEATRICE, Neb. – Attention kids of all ages! Come out to Homestead National Historical Park on Saturday, December 9, from 10 a.m. until noon. and join us in a ranger-led activity as we learn where homesteaders lived on the plains and construct our own homestead cabins. And of course, the event is FREE!  

A homesteader’s house was the key to survival on the plains, and the materials used to build a home varied with the location of the homestead. Some houses were simple dugouts, holes in the side of a hill. Others were fortunate enough to have wood for cabins, while the majority built houses of sod from the prairie. Participants will be able to build and decorate cabins to be used in a contest at the park later in December.

Homestead National Historical Park is a unit of the National Park Service, located four miles west of Beatrice, NE. Hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. Trails are open daily from dawn to dusk, and admission is free!
