BEATRICE, Neb. – Attention kids of all ages! Come to the Education Center at Homestead National Historical Park on Saturday, June 8 at 10 a.m. and join us in a ranger-led activity as we discover the world of wool spinning and dyeing. Create a bookmark or bracelet for yourself to take home and earn a Junior Ranger badge. Of course, the event is FREE!

During the homestead era, when people needed yarn or thread to make crafts and clothing, they didn’t have the convenience of a craft store to go and buy it. Wool was a great commodity if the homesteader was lucky enough to have sheep or have a neighbor who owned sheep. The sheep were sheared, the wool was cleaned, combed, dyed, then spun into yarn or thread to make everything from hats and gloves to hair ties and home décor. We hope to be outside for this activity so come dressed for the weather.
