On Thursday, February 8, 2018, Haleakalā National Park will launch ‘Ike Hana Lima (“Skilled Craftsmen”), a new series of free demonstrations, lectures, and workshops offered in local communities.

For the first `Ike Hana Lima event, Dr. William Chapman will speak on “Culture and Landscapes: Finding Significance in the Built and Natural Worlds.” Dr. Chapman will explore the evolution of the cultural landscape idea and what it can reveal about the significance and history of special places, such as Haleakalā. Dr. Chapman is Director of the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation and Professor in the Department of American Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

This free talk will be held in the Haynes Meeting Room at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm on February 8, 2018 and is offered in partnership with the American Studies Program at UH-Mānoa.

“The `Ike Hana Lima series will feature scholars and practitioners sharing their perspectives on the natural and cultural resources, traditions, and histories connected to Haleakalā,” said park archaeologist Rachel Hodara, who grew up in Makawao.

“These experts are not only perfecting their own crafts but also sharing their skills with others to ho‘omau (perpetuate) knowledge,” added Maui native and park interpretation and education specialist Honeygirl K. Duman. “Haleakalā is a wahi pana, a sacred and legendary place full of mysteries to be unfolded. I hope these programs will inspire our community to more strongly connect with and explore this wahi pana.”

Dr. Chapman’s talk is the first `Ike Hana Lima program. Future events will be promoted via press releases, the park’s Facebook page, and the park website, www.nps.gov/hale. For more information, please contact Honeygirl Duman at (808) 572-4455 or Bennadette_Duman@nps.gov.
