PENSACOLA, Fla. -- In celebration of Gulf Islands National Seashore's 50th anniversary, the City of Pensacola would like to invite the community to celebrate an unveiling ceremony of a new Ranger Pelican at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 7 at the Downtown Pensacola Ferry Landing, 750 Commendencia St.
The Ranger Pelican, dressed in a National Park Service uniform, brings attention to the natural and cultural resources protected by the seashore. Since January of 1971, Gulf Islands National Seashore has worked to preserve the barrier islands, coastal mainlands, and surrounding waters extending 160 miles from Mississippi to Florida coasts. The seashore also protects each of the 19th-century forts built across the park, including Fort Pickens, Fort Barrancas, Advanced Redoubt, and other historic landmarks.
The Ranger Pelican was made possible through a partnership between the City of Pensacola, Gulf Islands National Seashore, Pensacola Bay Cruises and the Port of Pensacola.
In addition to the preservation of natural and historic resources, Gulf Islands National Seashore serves millions of visitors each year, providing recreational resources and educational opportunities year-round. Pensacola Bay Cruises offers round-trip ferry rides from Downtown Pensacola to the National Seashore for visitors to enjoy Pensacola Beach and Fort Pickens.
