Gulf Breeze, Fla. - In coordination with Okaloosa County, the National Park Service will begin issuing Commercial Use Authorization permits for businesses operating at Crab Island for the 2019 season. Operators may apply for a park service permit immediately by visiting the park’s website (www.nps.gov/guis/getinvolved/cua.htm). Park service regulations require all commercial operators comply with state and local laws.

In July 2018, Okaloosa County passed Ordinance 18-19, regulating businesses at Crab Island. Operators must obtain a separate Okaloosa County permit after receiving their Commercial Use Authorizations from the park service. Requests for information regarding Okaloosa County permits should be directed to the county.

Crab Island is a large submerged sandbar within Gulf Islands National Seashore, located north of the Destin Bridge in Choctawhatchee Bay. During the summer recreation season, hundreds of boaters congregate daily at the island. Due to the shared jurisdiction of the Crab Island area, commercial operations require authorization from Okaloosa County as well as the park service.

The park service supports appropriate commercial opportunities within the park while ensuring the protection of park resources and in compliance with all federal and local laws and regulations.
