Grand Canyon, AZ – On October 3 and 5, 2016, Grand Canyon National Park partnered with Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) and the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) to support ongoing inspections of all commercial traffic entering the park.Grand Canyon National Park dedicates itself to provide the highest level of service to park visitors and staff through annual inspections that help increase safety on all park roadways. During the event, employees inspected 208 commercial vehicles, looking for unsafe vehicles. Of those 208 vehicles, 142 received Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance stickers, which indicate no safety-related violations were detected. NPS, AZDPS, and USDOT staff identified 237 violations from the 208 vehicles, including eight drivers and 12 vehicles with severe enough violations to be placed out of service. Some of the major violations included a bus with a six-inch crack in its frame near the engine mount, and several vehicles with at least one inoperable brake. National Park Service staff also conducted a simultaneous Commercial Use Authorization (CUA) audit of all passenger-carrying vehicles included in the inspection. Staff detected eight violations for either Violations of Terms and Conditions of a CUA or Failure to Obtain a CUA. A total of 17 Grand Canyon National Park employees, 50 AZDPS personnel, and four USDOT personnel participated in the two-day commercial vehicle inspection event. -NPS- |
