BAKER, NV – Great Basin National Park is planning a thinning project to reduce fuels around the park’s Mission 66 era Lehman Caves Visitor Center and day-use picnic area as part of a Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act (SNPLMA) funded project focused on restoration and documentation of the Lehman Caves historic area. Project goals are to increase defensible space and reduce the risk of structural damage or loss in the event of a fire. Tree cover and density will be reduced by tree removal (chainsaw thinning) of pinyon pine, juniper and mountain mahogany. Project information can be accessed through the National Park Service Planning, Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) website (https://parkplanning.nps.gov/LCVC_fuels) The comment period for this project closes May 10, 2020.
