BAKER, NV – Great Basin National Park is planning a thinning project in Can Young Canyon, approximately five miles southwest of Baker, NV. The project would reduce fuels and improve aspen stand conditions on approximately 22 acres within the project area. Project goals are to reduce competition and shading to improve the condition of aspen, riparian vegetation, and wildlife habitat. Chainsaws would be used to cut pinyon pine, Utah juniper, mountain mahogany, and white fir. Aspen and Ponderosa pine would not be cut. Slash and other cut material would be piled for future burning.

The project is being completed in partnership with the Nevada Department of Wildlife. Thinning would be completed by a contractor. Thinning treatments are scheduled to begin in 2023. Future pile burns would be completed by NPS fire crews, and the public notified before burn operations.
