Whats in the Park Archives and Records Center?Have you ever wondered what the Army left behind as they shut down operations and these lands became the GGNRA? The military is a bureaucratic part of the federal government. Which makes it highly efficient at creating paper trails. This is great for the archives and researchers who want to discuss the built environment of the base. Now the archive employees can’t always tell you who the army stationed here, because they didn’t leave us the personnel files. But, if you want to know when and how something was built from infrastructure to the roofs, we have that. This exhibit provides a glimpse of what’s in the archives beyond the confines of the building by making some of it visible, but if you see something you want to investigate or research further, just make an appointment (call (415) 561-2808 or e-mail us.), and come on down. The requested video is no longer available.

The Army left tons of area maps of the Presidio. These are combined with the National Park Services maps obtained from the National Archives, that helped write the historic resource studies. Enjoy this short example of 180 years of mapping the Presidio of San Francisco. |
