Tunnel to Marin Headlands Reopens on June 3, 2017

MARIN COUNTY, Calif. – The Baker-Barry Tunnel, a primary route to the Marin Headlands, will reopen by 7 a.m. on June 3, 2017, following the completion of safety and energy efficiency improvements.
 

The tunnel's concrete structure was preserved to provide safer passage for vehicles and bicyclists. More than 45,000 pounds of expansive polyurethane grout and resin was injected behind the tunnel walls and into cracks and joints to control water seepage that previously resulted in a slippery film of sediment on the road surface.

Additionally, a new LED light management system was installed in the tunnel reducing energy use by an estimated 40% and creating better illumination for both vehicles and bicyclists.  

“We continually work to improve visitor experience and to achieve both access and preservation," said Golden Gate National Recreation Area acting superintendent Cicely Muldoon. "This project does both. We are very excited to reopen the tunnel just in time for summer.”

The project also replaced outdated water and sewer lines mounted in the tunnel that were subject to frequent breaks, resulting in tunnel closures. 

This historic 100 year old tunnel is now modernized and preserved to bring the next century and welcome the future generation of park visitors to the Marin Headlands.  

The Baker-Barry Tunnel preservation project was completed in six months. The project was jointly funded by the National Park Service (NPS) and Federal Highways Administration (FHWA) and managed by FHWA with NPS support.
