The Crissy Field Center at Mason and Halleck Streets in the Presidio, operated by the National Park Service and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, will be relocating in September 2009 due to the acceleration of the Doyle Drive replacement project. The Doyle Drive project is now scheduled to begin this summer, 16 months earlier than originally planned, and will involve three to four years of heavy construction to improve seismic stability and safety. During this period, it will not be possible for the Center, which is directly adjacent to Doyle Drive, to operate safely or effectively with the disruptions of major construction, including truck traffic, dust, noise, and vibration.

A thorough survey of available and appropriate park sites determined that the easternmost edge of Crissy Field’s East Beach would be the best temporary location for the Center. This site allows the Center to continue using the natural and cultural resources of the national park, especially the outdoor areas of Crissy Field, in its community-based environmental programs that serve youth, schools, and community organizations. “Green” modular classrooms that meet rigorous environmental certification standards, are fully accessible, and are pre-approved by the state of California for school use will be assembled on site. The classrooms can be removed and re-used when the Crissy Field Center moves back to its current home.

The Crissy Field Center is a nationally recognized model for reaching out to underrepresented groups—especially urban youth—who have not traditionally visited National Parks. The Center plans to maintain its current programs. Minimal impact is expected on traffic and parking as very few staff drive to work, and most program participants arrive at the Center via public transportation or school bus. Existing parking lots will be unchanged. Current visitor amenities, including a snack bar and visitor information area with select items for sale, will be available at the new location.

Staff will explain the project, answer questions, and take comments at two Public Open Houses: Tuesday, May 19, 4-7 p.m. at GGNRA Headquarters, Bldg. 201, Fort Mason, San Francisco and Thursday, May 21, 4-7 p.m. at Mill Valley Community Center, 180 Camino Alto, Mill Valley. Comments may be submitted online at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/goga, via e-mail to goga_planning@nps.gov, or in writing to Superintendent, Fort Mason Building 201, San Francisco, CA 94123. Public comments must be submitted or postmarked by May 29, 2009.
