National Parks Waive Entrance Fees on November 11

Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Calif. Come visit one of America’s almost 400 national parks on Veterans Day. In recognition of current and former servicemen and—women,all national parks are waiving entrance fees on November 11, 2010. In the Bay Area, Muir Woods National Monument—the only local national park with an official NPS entrance fee—will waive their entrance fee.

"In honor of veterans, I invite everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to visit the many National Park sites throughout the Bay area—many of which recount the history of the military presence and importance to this country," Superintendent Frank Dean said. "The national treasures that are embodied in Muir Woods, Fort Point and the many beaches and military features that are scattered through Golden Gate National Parks are examples of what our veterans have kept safe for us. The National Park Service cares for these special places saved by the American people so that all may experience our heritage."

The more than 80,000 acres of lands in Golden Gate National Recreation Area hold something for everyone—hardcore hikers and campers and people who like to explore history, take a leisurely nature walk, or simply pack a picnic lunch and get away from it all. Visitors of all abilities and interests can enjoy a holiday, often without making more than a short trip from home.

Want to learn about U.S. military history in the Bay Area? Check out forts, batteries, and other military installations throughout the Recreation Area. The Nike Missile Site in the Marin Headlands is usually closed on Federal holdidays but will remain open this Veterans Day as it is every Wednesday through Friday from 12:30 until 3:30.

Want to watch a sunset? There are countless places in the park to watch the sun drop below the horizon across the vast Pacific Ocean.
