The National Park Service (NPS) is soliciting public comments on a proposal to improve three miles of the California Coastal Trail within the Presidio of San Francisco. Since 2003, the Presidio Trails and Bikeways Master Plan has been guiding ongoing efforts to develop a network of trails and bikeways within the Presidio. In 2008, the NPS, working with the Presidio Trust and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy (Conservancy), began concentrating on implementing the improvements approved in the Master Plan for the Presidio Coastal Trail. “When the Park began looking at implementing the Master Plan in this area it became clear that changes to the Presidio Coastal Trail alignment would have to be modified in order to meet accessibility guidelines for outdoor areas” said Frank Dean, Acting General Superintendent of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. These proposed actions include construction of a new trail bridge to serve pedestrians and bicyclists to provide an accessible, multi-use trail from the Merchant Road parking lot to the Golden Gate Bridge; expanded visitor parking at Merchant Road; expanded parking at Langdon Court; construction of a new accessible, pedestrian trail away from the Lincoln Boulevard corridor from Battery Crosby to Baker Beach, and reconfiguration of beach access by removing the Sand Ladder Trail and enhancing beach access at Baker Beach. Park staff will explain the project, answer questions, and take comments at the Public Open House and at two “walks and talks”. The Public Open House will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 4-7 p.m. at GGNRA Headquarters, Bldg. 201, Fort Mason, San Francisco. Staff will lead two “walks and talks” organized by the Parks Conservancy on November 12 and 21.On November 12th the hike will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 am. On November 21st, the hike will be held from 10 am to 12 noon. The hikes will be approximately 3 miles in length and will be moderately strenuous. Reservations must be made through the Parks Conservancy by calling 415-561-3054 or by email to trailsforever@parksconservancy.org. Comments may be submitted online at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/goga, via e-mail to goga_planning@nps.gov, or in writing to Superintendent, Fort Mason Building 201, San Francisco, CA 94123. Public comments must be submitted or postmarked by December 15, 2009. Additional questions regarding the Presidio Coastal Trail can be directed to Rich Weideman at (415) 561-4730. |
