BARTLETT COVE, ALASKA – Glacier Bay National Park and Deputy Superintendent Tom Schaff announced today that a 20-knot vessel speed limit in Lower Glacier Bay will remain in effect through October 20th, due to continuing whale use of that area. Due to the low level of vessel use in the area at this time of year, the mid-channel or 1 mile from shore course requirement is being lifted. This temporary closure is authorized under Title 36 of the Code of Federal Regulations 13.50 for conservation of sensitive species. See attached map for the boundary of the affected area.Recent surveys indicate that a number of feeding humpback whales are still scattered throughout Glacier Bay, including a concentration the Lower Bay. Vessels should proceed cautiously in all areas where whales may be present. Speed and course restrictions in whale waters are intended to reduce the disruption of feeding humpback whales and to lower the risk of whale/vessel collisions. Boaters are advised to verify whale waters designations prior to entering Glacier Bay. Updates are available at www.nps.gov/glba, by email at GLBA_VIS@nps.gov, or by telephoning (907) 697-2230.
