This notice is to inform visitors of a temporary closure to foot traffic and overnight camping along the shoreline north of the mouth of Geikie Inlet in the West Arm of Glacier Bay from Lat. 58 43.1344, Long. -136 23.6975 to Lat 58 41.7489, Long -136 21.7387 (see map). The remains of a humpback whale carcass that was in the Scidmore Cut area in 2010 has now washed up on the shoreline north of Geikie Inlet and bears and other scavengers are expected to continue to access this abundant food source as long as it is available. NPS employees will monitor the carcass and bear activity to determine when the area will be reopened. The closure is both to protect people from potential bear-human conflicts as well as minimize disturbance to animals scavenging on the carcass. Visitors are reminded that disturbance to wildlife is prohibitted under NPS Code of Federal Regulations 36 2.2(a)(2), and boaters should not approach wildlife at distances that cause the animals to change their behavior. Visitors are also reminded that it it a violation of National Park Service and Endagered Species Act regulations to remove whale bones.
