The National Park Service (NPS) is seeking feedback on a Glacier Bay National Park draft Marine Management Plan and Environmental Assessment between November 30 and December 30, 2022.
During this 30-day review, comments will be accepted on a draft marine management vision, supporting strategies, and an environmental analysis of alternatives—including a new alternative based on public scoping feedback that now represents the agency’s preferred alternative.
As part of the National Environmental Policy Act process, the NPS is hosting two public hearings in gateway communities near the park. The NPS will give a short presentation at the bottom of every hour, have staff on hand to answer questions, and a court reporter available to take testimony:
December 7 • Wednesday Gustavus Public Library 5 – 8 PM |
December 13 • Tuesday Juneau Public Library, Valley Branch 5 – 8 PM |
Park Superintendent Philip Hooge invites public feedback and review to enhance National Park Service marine stewardship of park waters, including balanced approaches to Glacier Bay access and vessel management:
“Since 1979, marine vessels have been managed to balance the protection of park resources with diverse experiences for visitors consistent with the park’s purpose and values. This document reaffirms the core of the existing framework and incorporates public scoping feedback about private boater’s opportunities under the existing permit system.”
The NPS will respond to substantive public comments and release a final plan and decision document this winter.
The public is encouraged to submit comments through the NPS PEPC website here. Comments will also be accepted during the public hearings, and by US mail: Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Attn. Marine Management Plan, PO Box 140, Gustavus, AK 99826.
