BARTLETT COVE, ALASKA – The National Park Service (NPS) has approved a plan for managing the designated Wilderness lands and waters of Glacier Bay National Park.
The decision document, in the form of a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI), was signed by Sarah Creachbaum, the NPS Alaska Regional Director, on June 1, 2023. The FONSI and a finalized plan incorporating changes based on public feedback and concerns are now available online:

“The plan is intended to be a model for meeting NPS Wilderness stewardship policy requirements while acknowledging the long and enduring connection between Indigenous people and their Homelands,” said NPS Alaska Regional Director Sarah Creachbaum. “The plan will guide the stewardship of Glacier Bay National Park and provide for quality visitor experiences into the future.”
For the 2023 backcountry camping season, overnight use permit requirements will remain the same. Next fall the park will publish detailed information for 2024 backcountry camping permit season on its permitting web page. The public is also encouraged to check for periodic updates here as the conceptual plans are refined for implementation.
